Varying in qualities such as temperature, humidity and pollution, the status of air is generally highly local to a particular context. The research explores how rendering air visible through an architectural intervention made of networked sentient prototypes can be used in the creation of a responsive outdoor public space. Architecture becomes the center negotiation piece between humans and machines within the complex urban ecology. Human emotions are as active as they are withdrawn, making the dialogue between the inner self and the exterior world something that is being perpetually stimulated and interacted with. The process in turn affects and influences the behaviors at individual and collective scales. Operating as a predictive processing machine, the body's sensorial and neural mechanisms attempt to interpret surrounding signals by comparing and matching particular situations against past experiences as they unfold in real-time. If humans are complex processing and emotional beings who enact and engage the physical realm, is it possible for objects and architecture to be imbued with the same kind of agency; able to be interacted with while remaining partially withdrawn? The project is materialized with three interrelated parts, (in fact, four if and when we count the human) (1) landscape/object, (2) sensors, (3) actuators. Content The magazine seeks to broadly elaborate on the theme of Monumental Wastelands, exploring the byproducts and rejects of our past and contemporary condition while teasing out new provocations and readings under unconventional lenses. If each civilization is remembered for the artifacts (monumentalized a posteriori) that they have left behind (the Egyptians for their pyramids, the Romans for their infrastructures) then what will be the equivalent(s) of contemporary civilization? Initially framed around overmined landscapes and toxic environments driven by globalised market-capitalism and consumerism, the ambition is to incorporate a multitude of topics and perspectives that touch on this foundational question without confining them to it. Contributions are therefore encouraged to expand upon the scope and the means by which the current state of affairs are examined addressing any combination of economical, political, social, environmental, legal, technological, anthropological issues (to only name a few). Wood shavings, a waste materiel from fabrication processes are mixed with a bio-resin that allows them to transform from a soft and malleable state to a rigid state, which during this phase change shaped by any two human actors with no previous training and are instructed to simply hug and squeeze the bags between their bodies with a specific intensity. The highly redudant and intricate structure leverages the human’s ability to navigate between tight and heterogeneous spaces where each person can easily adapt to unanticipated circumstances. However, such a process incurs an accumulation of minor imprecisions which unless iterratively corrected can result in large amounts of deviation from the original overall target geometry. The results are rendered visible in the space through color coded strings suspended from the interior, which can be read by its visitors as an inverted toxi-cartographic map of the city. Tags hanging at the end of each string carry information of the mineral in question as well as a QR code that redirects users to an interactive website where they can restructure the information based on different parameters. By manifesting itself through hair grown by people and revealing its mineral content, Follicle is about expressing architecture and urban ecology as much as it is about empowering citizen(s) through information. Movements such as an arm swing are easily repeatable within a degree of accuracy and are materialized using a composite mesh and sprayfoam. Each individual’s movements are scanned and computationally paired in patterns that form structurally stable lattice towers. Because no two movements are identical, each layer of each tower is scanned and updated in order to generate the next sequence of human patterning.
